Professionals that splash out on period fittings for their home could benefit from an increase in house price value, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).
Amid uncertainty over whether rates on mortgages for professionals will improve or not in 2008, home improvements can be an excellent way to increase property value.
However, NHIC consultant Andrew Leech warns homeowners that period fittings need to be compatible with the design of the house.
He said: "You've got to be very careful as it can go the opposite way round if you put something which is too antique in a property is fairly modern."
Although, he adds that there are appropriate styles that "are made in modern materials that will last a lot longer than any original features", which also require less maintenance.
According to Mr Leech, fittings are particularly advisable for professionals because they tend to be able to afford the period houses for which such fittings are appropriate.
He explained: "There is a big demand for it…usually they're [in] homes being built in the £1,000,000-plus price range."
