Energy efficiency will be key for future mortgages
This announcement comes at the same time as the government commissioned Callcutt Review is published, calling for greater investment in zero-carbon housing developments.
According to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), environmental improvements could be key to potential buyers deciding to take out a mortgage.
Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the NHIC, said: "We are going to reach a stage where mortgages and getting a mortgage on a house will tie in with how efficient the house is."
"Anyone who has an inefficient house and is thinking of selling in a couple of years time maybe ought to think about whether their house is efficient," he added.
This advice will be of particular use for high-earning professionals, among whom often energy inefficient period-properties are popular.
