Cosmetic home improvements cost Brits millions
A quarter of a million Brits cause a massive £350 million worth of DIY damage, according to the Halifax Home Insurance.
This follows research by Saga that found around a third of all Brits spend money on unnecessary home improvements every five years.
But the research comes with a stark warning to check insurance coverage before embarking on any work.
According to the research, most unfixed building materials - such as kitchen and bathroom units - are excluded by insurers as standard.
Vicky Emmott of Halifax Home Insurance said: “It all looks so simple on TV, making it easy to forget that the work on makeover shows is being carried out by highly trained and skilled professionals.
“If you don’t know what you’re doing we’d advise anyone planning any major improvements that DIY should really stand for Don’t Involve Yourself.”
Saga found that two-thirds of people are unaware that notification is often required in advance by insurers.
Improvements to bedrooms and bathrooms are top of the list with around 40 per cent of homeowners opting to have them refurbished since 2004.
